I recently visited a town called Hahndorf, a german town situated approximately 40 minutes out of Adelaide in South Australia. It was a Sunday when we drove through, so seeings it was a weekend there were lots of people around. We finally found a carpark and decided to walk down the street and have a look at the German shops before finding a place to eat lunch.
When the time came to eat we headed to one of the Hotels hoping to get a table, only to be knocked back because they had no tables available. So we wondered over to the other pub, and the waiter told us the wait for a table would be over an hour. Well, we were so hungry and the last thing we wanted to do was hang around waiting, so we ended up finding a cafe/restaurant called ‘the Haus’.
This place was quite large and luckily for us they had one table left. We sat down and ordered soon afterwards. My boy ordered one of there Haus Rustic Pizzas with ham, cheese and pineapple. It came out served on a hot wooden board. The pizza base was handmade, thin and soft with crunchy edges. The ham they used tasted like it was some kind of smoked ham, very nice.
I ordered a traditional German dish they called the ‘Trio of Wursts’ (see picture on top of article). It consisted of Bratwurst, bockwurst and a cheese kransky sausage on top of sauerkraut, creamy mustard potato bake and beerenberg mustard. The sausages tasted very different to the commercialised ones I normally buy in the shops or my local butcher, they had so much more flavour. i didn’t really like how the sauerkraut was cooked, a bit bland, but when combined with the mustard and sausages the taste wasn’t so bad.
For dessert I ordered the Banoffie Pie, this has got to be one fo my favourite dessert pies. I’m not sure if it was made in the restaurant or bought from a company, but this pie was amazing, it satisfied me 100% and I ate every bit of it. Now time for the gym!!!
The Haus had a busy atmosphere, so not the kind of place to go to if you want a more intimate dining experience. The only thing I can complain about is the service, the waiters forgot some of our meals numerous times, and then they couldn’t get our bill right. Apart from that, the food was very nice. i would come back here again. Haus is open 7 days for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper.
