China Bar
For all those Asian food, yum cha, thai, Indian, seafood lovers out there, you can not miss out on this restaurant. China Bar Signature Asian Buffet is located in Burwood East Victoria and has the largest array of food on offer. The outside and inside of the building is lit up with dazzling lights, and as you enter you are warmy greeted by waiters who guide you to your table. I suggest you make a booking when dining here, we got here at 6pm when they first opened for the evening and by 7pm all the tables were full. Because it was a buffet you dont need to wait for food, so soon after we were seated we got up to choose our first plate. We headed over to the sushi section.

We had baby octopus, squid strips, salmon sushi, tempura prawn sushi, crab salad cups, and more sushi to get us started. It was my first at the baby octopus and I really enjoyed it, even though it was quite chewy, it still had lots of flavour. I couldnt work out what the squid strips were seasoned with, they were very salty in taste but so tender, it was my favourite of the sushi section.
Next up we went for the curries. I served up some coconut rice with the beef curry which I didn’t find hot at all. I’m half Sri Lankan and I normally love a nice hot curry, but this beef one didn’t have the heat I expected, but the meat was still tender. I also tried some ‘hot spicy schezuan chicken’ which again wasn’t really hot (well to me anyway). The naan bread went well with the beef skewers and satay sauce. On the side I added sambal, and it was a very nice tasting sambal too.
‘Dumplings Dumplings Everywhere!!!!’ Now this place was definitely for me. If you’ve read my other posts you’ll know I love duck, peking duck, and dumplings! At China Bar they had a table full of different dumplings, anything you could think of. They also had peking duck there so I couldn’t resist a few of those too.
Now there was also seafood, and heaps of it too. The crab was beautiful and the prawns tasted so fresh. They also had oysters and calamari too. Next to the seafood section was some Japanese dishes like braised pork belly, Japanese style calamari, vegetarian dishes and more.
Here is a picture of steamed mung bean with pandan flavour. It tasted really sweet and went down well with my jasmine tea.
Desserts: China Bar had a full fridge of desserts, we had 2 plates so we could try a few. We had Pistacio cream cake, Grass jelly and green tea sponge cake (I found a bit boring), white chocolate mousse which was great, summer pudding, black forest cake, durian cheesecake which was absolutely tasty!!!! Some mung bean pudding which I wouldn’t try again (not my tastebuds anyway) chocolate mousse, pavlova, creme brulee (my favourite), creme caramel and many more to choose from. They also had fruit and fruit salad, cheeses, ice creams and a selection of chocolates.
At the restaurant they had a chef on hand to cook you anything you like on the wok. I could be here all day writing about this place, it was huge. I can garantee that you will go home satisfied. China bar open in sessions, Monday – Thursday for lunch from 12pm – 3pm and dinner from 6pm – 10pm. Friday – Sunday they have 2 lunch and 2 dinner sessions 12pm – 1:30pm and 1:30pm – 3pm for lunch, 6pm – 8pm and 8pm – 10pm for dinner. The all you can eat buffet is $49 for adult Monday to Thursday, $55 for adult Friday to Sunday for dinner and $29 per adult for lunch. Please note too that for lunch they don’t serve seafood or pecking duck.

Having been to Hong Kong, I must say that buffets in Asia are quite the sight. It’s amazing the extensive array of offering that they have. It’s like a whole eating culture built around the joys of the buffet. Gotta love countries who worship at the buffet altar.
Oh wow! China bar buffet style. Pretty amazing spread.
Chinese buffet has always been a favorite in my family because of the amazing spread and the fact that you can eat all you want. But after an hour of trying everything your eyes can see, I always feel like passing out from over-stuffing myself and the preservatives these restaurants put in their food… Inspite of it all, I always go back.
Hi there,
I tried sending you an email yesterday to notify you that you had won my Taste of Melbourne 2010 competition but haven’t heard from you. Could you please email me your address details so I can send the tickets out to you?
